Counting words in IELTS

Counting words in IELTS is essential for accurate communication. Here's a breakdown to help you understand how words are counted:

1. Numbers, Dates, and Time:

   - In writing, numbers, dates, and time are each counted as one word. Examples include 30,000, 55, 9.30am, and 12.06.2016.

   - Note that "Six million" is considered as two words in IELTS writing.

   - In listening, 30,000 and 9.30AM are counted as one number each.

2. Dates in Words and Numbers:

   - Dates expressed as both words and numbers are counted differently:

     - Example: "12th July" is counted as one number and one word in IELTS listening, but as two words in IELTS writing.

3. Symbols with Numbers:

   - Symbols with numbers are not counted. For instance, 55% is considered one number (the "%" symbol is not counted as a word).

   - However, if you write "55 percent," it is counted as one word and one number.

4. Small Words and Prepositions:

   - Small words like "a" or "an" are counted, as are all prepositions such as "in" or "at."

   - Every word is counted in these cases.

5. Hyphenated Words:

   - Hyphenated words, like "up-to-date," are counted as one word.

6. Compound Nouns:

   - Compound nouns written as one word, such as "blackboard," are also counted as one word.

7. Compound Nouns as Separate Words:

   - Compound nouns written as two separate words, like "university bookshop," are counted as two words.

8. Counting Words in Brackets:

   - All words, including those within brackets, are counted. For instance, in IELTS writing, the sentence "The majority of energy was generated by electricity (55%)" is counted as 9 words. The number in brackets is also included. Note that brackets can be used in IELTS Writing Task 1 but not in IELTS Listening or IELTS Reading.

9. Counting Articles ("the," "a," "an"):

   - Each occurrence of words like "the" is counted separately. For example, in the sentence "The man walked into the shop for the newspaper," there are 9 words.

10. Counting Contractions:

    - Contractions are counted based on their written form. For example, "it's" is counted as one word, while "it is" is counted as two words.
